June 6th is National Trails Day, so in light of this, S and I found our way to the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon. We had originally planned on only walking around Silver Lake. There is a well maintained boardwalk and trail around the lake starting at the Nordic Center — and it’s a very nice evening stroll but I convinced S to “go offroad” and take the 2-miler to Lake Solitude.
The trail is easy to spot and without much elevation gain, although you’re already close to 9,000ft at the trailhead. It’s a simple out-and-back and on this day, we almost had the trail to ourselves (the lake lived up to its name!) It was another beautiful day in the Wasatch Mountains, with a fair amount of snow left on several peaks and near the lake itself.
